about

From the triumphant “Change Your Name” to the sober reflections of “Happier With Me” or the backseat confessional of “Paradise” the characters on The Witness Marks debut album are driven by the need for community during personal setbacks. Musically these heartfelt rockers channel artists like Bruce Springsteen, Jason Isbell, and Dawes. Elsewhere the gossamer “Birthmark” muses about the nature of loss with lush accompaniment of strings and piano. Meanwhile other songs like “Honey Hole” discuss the complex interaction of toxic masculinity and systematic violence. The earlier studio splendor is counterbalanced with tracks like “Long Way Home” and “Each Room” that lean more towards Bright Eyes or David Dondero.

In addition to the lineup (Moses Andrews III, Ethan Fogus, Sean Thomson, Alex Skiro) this album is backed by some pretty top-notch folks; Kristen Harris & Kelley McLachlan (The Boomtown Waifs,) Mario McLean, Ross Swinson, (flower shopping,) and Emily Wait. It was recorded live at the Jam Room, and produced by Zac Thomas in Columbia, SC.

“more emotionally confrontational style to their roots-rock travails. Fogus can often deliver a lyric with the quivering intensity of Conor Oberst, something accentuated by the lolloping storytelling style of his songs and the lush, overflowing instrumentation which provides so much color and verve.” - The Jasper Project

“With a voice that quivers like Conor Oberst’s and with some of the grit heard in early Springsteen, like those two Fogus’ voice takes some getting use to. Like any character with a strong personality, once you do you’ll come in tune with the greater story of personal connections conveyed.” – Scene SC

“the vibe of The Witness Marks is similar to what a band like Deer Tick captures, [ . . . ] The rolling acoustic guitar is what initially invites you to listen to the lyrics,” - Extra Chill

“a collection of songs about people searching for a sense of community,” – Sound In The Signals
